CUT – When cut correctly, the diamond reflects light from one facet to another, then distributes through to the top of the stone. If a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep, light will escape and, well frankly it just won’t be as pretty and shiny. Don’t get confused with the cut and the shape of the diamond, though. COLOR – There is a wide variety of color when it comes to diamonds: faint yellow, brown, pinks, blues, greens, etc. These colors are known as “fancies.” But if you’re looking to really impress your girl, your best choice is to go with no color at all. A colorless diamond allows light to pass through with more ease, making it even more beautiful! Colors are graded from completely colorless to light yellow. CLARITY – A diamond’s clarity is determined by using a 10-power magnifying glass and a trained eye. Impurities that are found in most diamonds are called “inclusions” which get in the way of light that passes through the diamond. That means the fewer inclusions, the more glorious your future fiancée will find the diamond. Diamonds are more brilliant than any other gemstone; one that is free of any inclusions or blemishes is incredibly rare and even more incredibly valuable. CARAT – The weight of a diamond is measured in carats and is pretty easy to determine. Each carat is divided into 100 points, meaning if a diamond is 75 points, it weighs .75 ct. Keep in mind, though, even if two diamonds are the same carat-weight, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are worth the same amount.
