Holiday Engagement: Do’s and Don’ts

It is important that you think carefully about how, where and when you plan to propose. Women vary in how they feel about being asked in front of others and your girlfriend may prefer the moment to be special between the two of you as opposed to in front of the entire family during Christmas dinner.

If your girlfriend is the sentimental type who loves the warmth of Christmas or thrives on the thought of new beginnings with the New Year, then by all means propose to her during her favorite holiday. Remember to keep the moment special and the engagement something she will always remember, such as hanging the ring from the Christmas tree or dropping it her glass champagne on New Year’s Eve. Make the moment fun and memorable.

If you have any doubts about what her answer will be, do not propose in front of others. If the two of you have discussed the possibility of marriage and she is apprehensive about the subject or you haven’t ever discussed the topic of marriage, it is best to make this a private moment between the two of you. Otherwise, she may feel obligated to say yes and will only change her mind later.

Do not propose without a ring. If you want to propose and do not have the money for an expensive engagement ring, buy a less expensive substitute until you can buy the ring you have your heart set on. But, do not propose with only a promise to buy a ring later.
