How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring

So you are finally ready to take that final step with your significant other, but you don’t even know where to start on buying the engagement ring! We can help you with this! Buying an engagement ring can be a grueling task, you don’t know if she will like it and you also don’t know what the right price of a diamond ring should be!

Rule 1: Shop Around

Don’t buy a ring from the first place you look! Diamond rings are sold at any jewelry retailer, you can shop around for the best prices and the best deals. The great thing about shopping around is that you can always go back to your top ranked store and then purchase the ring. The average price for an engagement ring is not 3 months salary, it is whatever you feel comfortable paying. According to TheKnot.Com the average price for a ring should be $5,000. In 2010 diamond engagement rings grossed around $7.7 billion!

Rule 2: Know your 4 C’s

Diamond Color Chart

The four C’s are something you will hear a lot from us at Engagement Ring Gurus. It originated from GIA (Gemological Institute of America) to categorize a diamond quality. The four C’s stand for Carat Weight, Color, Clarity and Cut. If you know what is qualified as a good diamond you will be able to get a great deal on a ring. The first thing a person notices about a diamond is the sparkle, then the color. So one of the major things to be aware of is the clarity, then color. Virtually colorless diamonds are from E-I. E-M are classified as colorless stones,  but you can start to see a hint of yellow once you get passed I. Diamond Clarity Chart

If you want to save on a diamond we recommend going with a color G-I. G is colorless to the naked eye and a fraction of the price. For clarity the lowest you should go is SI2. SI stands for slightly included, anything below that will be noticeable to the naked eye. The range of clarities ranges from F, IF, VVS1, VV2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3, Below I3. Many people think that if you get anything less than a VS2 clarity stone you are getting a bad quality diamond. This isn’t true SI stones are very good quality to the everyday person! If you hold up a magnified jewelers loop to it, that is the only time you can notice inclusions.

Rule 3: Find out What She Likes

If she tells you she wants a round diamond, get her a round diamond. Don’t try to get a ring that you think looks good, at the end of the day she is going to be the one wearing it for the rest of her life! In more modern days, women like to go with the man and pick out the engagement ring themselves. This can be equally as romantic on proposing. Another thing to keep in mind is asking your jeweler if you can exchange the ring within a certain amount of time just in case your girlfriend doesn’t like the ring choice.

Rule 4: Know her Size

This can be a hard thing to find without making it obvious you are going to get her a ring. The good thing is many jewelers will size the ring after you propose, complimentary. One thing you NEED to know is that if the ring has pave diamond throughout the shank IT CANNOT BE RESIZED! If there is any type of intricate design and diamonds on the back of the shank the likely-hood of changing the size is impossible! Go through her rings, find one and bring it to your jeweler so they can fit the ring! Or take her to the store with you and say you want to get her a ring for your anniversary. It is so obvious she won’t think it is a proposal! Take a right hand measurement not left just to misguide her.
