  1. Measure the size of the loose gemstone you want to set. Figure out the gemstones’ width, length and depth in millimeters with a ruler. Keep in mind that basket settings are categorized by their size in millimeters.
  2. Determine the cut of the loose gem stone you plan to set. Cuts can include, but aren’t limited to emerald, princess, round, pear, cushion and rose. You should know the cut of the gem so you can choose a basket setting in the right shape as well as the proper size.
  3. Pick a basket setting for the gem stone you wish to set. Select a basket setting that corresponds to the size and cut of the gemstone. You can find basket settings online or a professional jeweler can order them for you.
