Jewelry Care: 7 Tips for Taking Care of Your Engagement Ring and Wedding Band

Engagement rings and wedding bands are so important because they represent the love and commitment between you and your husband. With that being said, you must make sure that you take excellent care of your rings so they last as long as you both shall live. Most retailers will tell you how to take care of your ring and properly clean it at the time of purchase, but you should make sure you know how to keep your rings from becoming tarnished. Keep in mind, each ring has its own particular cleaning ritual depending on the stones and metal it has.  Let’s take a look at jewelry care.

Jewelry Care: 7 Tips for Taking Care of Your Engagement Ring and Wedding Band

  1. The easiest metal to take care of is a platinum ring because it’s so durable and never tarnishes. However, the longer you have the platinum ring, the easier it is to scratch which eventually leads to a grayish tone. This can be polished away though with special buffers.
  2. To keep your platinum ring from experiencing wear and tear, you should do your best to not wear it when you’re working in the garden or doing housework. You also want to keep it away from other jewelry when you store it to keep from getting scratched up.
  3. You should clean your jewelry once a week in jewelry cleaner for 15-20 minutes and then rinse it with warm water. If you have a platinum ring, you should polish it once a year to make sure it is always shiny and brilliant.
  4. To take care of stones, soak them in water with liquid detergent once a week to get rid of any nasty bacteria and dead skin cells that have built up.
  5. For a diamond setting, use a solution of half ammonia and half cool water. Soak the ring in this for 30 minutes. Afterwards, pat the ring dry and place the ring in a separate container than other jewelry to keep it from being scratched.
  6. You should have your ring checked every six months to make sure the stone hasn’t come loose.
  7. Get your ring insured! Your man spent a good amount of money on that rock on your finger, so wouldn’t you both be pretty devastated if something happened to it?
