Tips for Cleaning a Diamond Engagement Ring

Tips for Cleaning RingJust because you don’t go digging in the garden everyday doesn’t mean that you’re keeping your engagement ring looking its best. Simply using hand lotion or styling your hair with hairspray is enough to leave a nasty film on your ring that could cause damage if you don’t clean your ring often enough. By leaving the grime on your ring, the diamond will appear to be dull and lack luster. Just washing your hands regularly isn’t enough to get your ring shining like the day you received it. Here are some tips to guide you as you bring your diamond engagement ring back to its stunning self.

Tips for Cleaning a Diamond Engagement Ring

Clean a Diamond Ring:

  1. Soak your diamond ring in a warm mixture of liquid detergent and water. Any mild detergent will be fine.
  1. Use a soft bristled toothbrush to remove any dirt. It’s important that the bristles are soft – don’t use a toothbrush with bristles that are so stiff that they scratch up the ring’s metal setting.
  2. Swirl the ring around in the mixture, and then rinse it thoroughly in warm water. Be sure to close the drain before you do this! You don’t want to lose your diamond engagement ring down the drain after all the work you put into cleaning it.
  3. Dry your ring gently with a lint-free cloth.
  4. If the diamond and setting are incredibly dirty, use a dental irrigation device to get rid of small bits of grime. You can even use a wooden toothpick to carefully push dirt out of the diamond and setting.

Avoid using ammonia to clean your ring – it can eventually remove the coating that’s placed on your gemstone. Even simply swimming with your ring on can cause damage because of the chlorine in the water.
