Why the left hand 4th finger?

Wedding rings are one of the most widely recognized symbol of love around the world. They are precious pieces of jewelry that are worn by couples all around the world to symbolize the love and life long commitment to one another. When it comes to weddings, there are certain traditions and rituals that are followed during a wedding ceremony prior to the ring exchange. From walking down the isle, to champagne showers while getting ready, the traditions are countless. However one of the most celebrated tradition is that of the wedding ring, the ring is almost always placed on the fourth finger of the left hand, which raises the question as to why?.

Dating back to thousands of years ago, there was a Greek and Roman belief that there is a vein that runs from the fourth finger on the left hand directly to the heart. This vein was known as the ‘vena amoris’ also known as the vein of love.  This ancient belief led to the tradition of wearing the wedding ring on that particular finger, symbolizing the love of the couple being married with eternal vows. According to scientific evidence, this myth has been proven to not be true, however many individuals still like to believe that it is.

If you take a look at your left hand, each finger is a representation of the past the present and the future generations within your family. Your thumb represents your parents, your index finger represents your siblings, the middle finger represents yourself, your fourth finger represents your spouse and your pinkie, represents your future children. Some still believe this to be true however science has not found proof.

Although ancient theory of love and life prove more to be interesting then true, we love to learn more about love. The symbol of the wedding ring represents eternal love, the ring is a circle because it has no beginning and no end, hence why marriages are meant to last forever. The more practical myth behind wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand is because most individuals are right handed. Meaning the left hand is not used as much during daily use, most likely the ring will not get as damaged or dinged, than if it were used on the right hand. Also, the ring finger is one of the least used fingers after the pinkie. Most countries around the world practice the tradition of wearing the ring on the left hand, although there are a few that prefer to sport the ring on the right hand, but most choose the left. Which ever hand you choose to wear your ring on, be proud to wear it and show off that you are in a life long commitment!
